At SMS Equipment, our Technical Support Specialist - Construction is responsible for supporting business activities through specialized technical knowledge and equipment applications. The Technical Support Specialist acts as a technical resource and trouble shooter for branch service departments. They will provide a deeper understanding of equipment workings, applications, usage, and limitations.

This position is based in Acheson, AB. Travel to various customer sites is required, approximately 30% of the time.

Salary range for this role is $115,000 - $130,000, dependent on qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop and maintain an in-depth knowledge of Komatsu, Bomag & Takeuchi product lines, staying updated on equipment changes, developments, and service requirements. Investigate and resolve mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic system issues using engineering standards, technical manuals, and electronic test tooling.

  • Assist OEMs and SMS Equipment branches with product assembly, commissioning, and service across all lines, providing technical advice and support. Gather and document equipment failure data, addressing service issues, design deficiencies, and safety concerns, while offering feedback on product reliability and improvement opportunities to relevant departments and OEMs.

  • Provide customer support and serve as the primary communication link between customers, OEMs (Komatsu, Bomag, & Takeuchi), and SMS Equipment, addressing application-related issues, operational performance problems, and technical concerns in collaboration with the local support branch. Ensure all staff and customers exercise safe procedures and practices in the operation of equipment. Provide warranty technical support for SMS Equipment branches and Western Region Warranty department.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will hold a Journeyperson trade certification with at least 5 years of post-certification experience in the heavy equipment business within the construction industry.

Other requirements include:

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, client-focused environment, maintaining strong customer relations.
  • A positive, dependable attitude, with the ability to stay calm under pressure and make effective decisions.
  • Field experience with heavy equipment is an asset.
  • Red Seal certification in a relevant trade is an asset.
