NAIT is currently recruiting qualified individuals for the position of Casual Communications Officer (Dispatcher) that would be working as a member of the NAIT Protective Services (NPS) unit. NPS is a high-paced environment, and our Communications Officers are primarily responsible for receiving, evaluating, and dispatching calls for service to the appropriate resources. The Communications Officer provides primary support to the Protective Services Peace Officers, Security Agents, and NAIT's Parking Enforcement Officers, and liaises with Edmonton's emergency response agencies. This position works within a team structure and plays a key role to ensuring that both officer and public safety are maintained and is often the first point of contact for non-emergency calls for assistance.
The Communications Officer provides callers with appropriate pre-arrival and post-dispatch instructions and is responsible for managing fast-flowing information and is required to have excellent oral and written communication skills. The successful candidate must possess excellent time management skills and be able to multi-task effectively within an ever-changing environment and must have above average computer-based knowledge and skills using Windows and various other software suites specific to this role as well as to NAIT's systems including security systems, CCTV systems, life safety systems, and others. Working within the NAIT Community, the Communications Officer, who reports to a Peace Officer Sergeant, is stationed in the NAIT Protective Services main office and often interacts with the public; therefore, the successful candidate must possess excellent customer service skills for in person interactions as well as remote interactions which are based on respect and professionalism.
This position is required to wear a uniform, which is provided by the employer.
Key Responsibilities:
Evaluating and managing incoming information/calls for service on a priority basis.
Dispatching Community Peace Officer resources and liaising with partner law enforcement and emergency service agencies.
Monitor Closed Circuit Television System (CCTV), alarms, and operational screens identifying situations where there is a potential risk to the NAIT Community, and initiate responses to the appropriate NAIT resources or other emergency response agencies.
Respond to requests for assistance via emergency phones, alarms, panic buttons, etc.
Follow departmental procedural reporting methods to accurately record and log all identified events and incidents
Provide exceptional customer service to walk-in clients at a busy front reception counter.
Perform a variety of general support duties related to the operation of a communications and dispatch center.

Qualifications:
Completion of Grade 12 Education.
Completion of a Certificate or Diploma related to Emergency Communications and Response through a recognized post-secondary institution OR equivalent related experience.
3 years strong customer service experience.
Computer experience with Microsoft Windows based systems and Microsoft Office Applications is required.
Experience working within a post-secondary environment is not required, but is preferred.
Police Security Clearance Letter (must be obtained upon offer of employment or no more than 90 days prior) and be satisfactory to NAIT Protective Services.
Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services or the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS).
Remuneration: $21.98 - $ 28.41 hourly, plus 12% in lieu of stat. holiday and vacation pay (Classification - Security Communications Officer).
This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
