About the role

We're looking for a Unit Manager, Legal Claims Support (Edmonton), to join our growing team!

This role will be for a temporary 12-month secondment/contract.

What you'll do here:

  • Oversee the day-to-day responsibilities of the Law Clerks, Legal Assistants and Administrative Support members.

  • Establish and communicate clear performance objectives for your team and continually measuring the progress on the attainment of these objectives.

  • Ensure a high level of employee engagement by continually monitoring overall engagement and creating and executing engagement action plans.

  • Assessing the strengths and areas of opportunity for your team and putting forth recommendations for improvement.

  • Providing regular and ongoing feedback, mentoring and coaching to your team.

  • Identifying key talent and providing ongoing developmental opportunities for the optimization and engagement of our key talent.

  • Leading the recruitment process including but not limited to the interview and selection process and the onboarding of new employees.

  • Facilitate regular team meetings, one-on-ones and huddles to ensure the two-way flow of information.

  • Assist your team to understand and apply policies, procedures and theories.

  • Driving change while maintaining effective communication to ensure your team is informed of new initiatives, processes and/or workflows.

  • Plan and implement office systems, as well as organize office operations and procedures.

  • Partner with HR to lead the recruitment process including but not limited to the interviewing and selection process and the onboarding of new employees.

  • Participate on project-based tasks as assigned by Director and/or VP Legal Claims.

  • Compile and analyze statistics and reports while monitoring and predicting legal trends


What you bring to the table:

  • University Degree or College Diploma in relevant discipline (legal, paralegal or management) or equivalent education combined with relevant work experience is required.

  • Minimum of five to eight years of experience in a litigation environment or equivalent relevant experience.

  • Minimum of two years of management experience or equivalent relevant experience.

  • Proven and effective communication/interpersonal skills to develop and foster favourable relationships.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite programs, I-Manage, and other e-discovery tools.

  • Proven project management skills; planned, led and successfully executed projects.

  • Experience implementing and driving change by encouraging innovative thinking and changes in an operation.

  • Experience leading a large team including establishing and measuring performance, providing open and honest feedback and maintaining employee engagement.
