About the Position:

Reporting to the Senior Director, Community Animal Centres, this position ensures the effective delivery of all applicable BC SPCA programs and services within the designated communities/region. The Senior Manager regularly liaises with other BC SPCA departments for the delivery of provincial programs at the local level. This includes but is not limited to the delivery of animal services in the Animal Centre, fundraising and stakeholder relationship management, community engagement and outreach, and humane education programming. This position is also responsible for regular liaison with other Senior Managers within the Animal Care Services department to ensure consistency in program implementation. Key functions also include building relationships with other stakeholders in the organization, managing an area budget, and participating in strategic planning.

Some specific duties:

Management & Leadership:

  • In conjunction with provincial departments, ensures seamless implementation and successful execution of all BC SPCA programs and services in the area.
  • In conjunction with provincial departments, develops annual strategic and operational goals and objectives for the area that are consistent with and flow from the Strategic Plan.
  • Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, onboarding, annual goal setting, performance management, and termination of direct reports ; provides coaching and mentorship and ensures objectives and goals are met.
    • Acts as the community ambassador/representative of all BC SPCA programs, policies and procedures and uses effective change management techniques to ensure high rates of success in implementation and compliance.
  • Acts as a champion for health, safety and wellness within area of responsibility; ensures that all legal requirements in health & safety are met and appropriate records are maintained.
    • Analyzes area performance in relation to defined metrics and provides feedback, guidance, training and any other remedial action in order to positively impact results.
    • In conjunction with provincial departments, identifies and responds to community needs, ensuring excellent relations and promotion of the BC SPCA's mission and services in the community; attends community events regularly and serves as the primary spokesperson for all BC SPCA programming in the area.
    • Ensures effective communication, coordination, and accountability of the Animal Centre in Large Scale Animal Intake (LSAI) files.
    • Acts as the face of the BC SPCA in the area at community events and in the media.
    • Covers for other Senior Managers during periods of absence, as assigned.

Administration & Financial Management:

    • Tracks and reports on the successful implementation and maintenance of established key performance indicators (KPIs) and other metrics within assigned area.
    • Prepares and administers assigned area budget and provides input into Animal Care Services department budgeting as required.
    • Ensures physical facilities are well maintained and assists with requests for capital improvements to buildings and/or the development of new buildings in the region.
    • As applicable, assists with the management of local animal control and kenneling contracts and leads the renewal of contracts in assigned area.
    • Develops business cases for new initiatives and presents them to appropriate authorities in provincial departments for consideration.
    • Represents assigned area on internal and external committees, as assigned.
    • Identifies, plans and executes a comprehensive set of fundraising activities. If there is a Senior Officer, Community Fundraising designated to the area, this position does these duties in partnership with that position.
    • Supports organizational fundraising efforts.
  • Addresses escalated stakeholder questions and complaints, as required.
  • Works closely with the Regional Councils (CC) in assigned area through regular attendance at meetings and ongoing dialogue.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications you need to have:

  • University degree in Business, Management or other related discipline plus a minimum 8 years' related experience including minimum 3 years' experience in a managerial/supervisory role. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable to the Employer. Related experience includes, but is not limited to:
    • Successful budget management;
    • Change management;
    • Fundraising;
    • Relationship management and customer service; and
    • Experience working in non-profits, animal welfare organizations, and/or with volunteers would be considered an asset.
  • Proven leader with a track record of developing a high-performing team; for those areas that are unionized, experience working in a unionized environment would be an asset.
  • Strategic and creative thinker with a strong focus on process and continuous improvement.
  • Strong business acumen.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize work, meet priorities and to work within a demanding work schedule with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work with internal and external stakeholders at all levels and from diverse backgrounds in a positive and respectful manner.
  • Ability to successfully address and resolve conflict.
  • Excellent presentation and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to travel throughout assigned region and Province as necessary. Must have a valid Class N or 5 BC Drivers' License and driver's abstract
  • Computer skills - Windows, MS Office incl. PowerPoint and Excel.
