The Biological Mass Spectrometry (BMS) CORES facility aims to provide access and support towards the utilization of cutting-edge mass spectrometry technologies in a diverse range of research and development areas. The BMS CORES caters to a wide range of individuals, both within Dalhousie, and across Canada, and strives to maintain an accessible and inclusive environment for research.
Job Summary
Reporting to the BMS Manager, the CORES Technician works with and assists the BMS Manager in both lab and administrative activities and facilitates the day-to-day operations of the BMS CORES. Efficient operation of the BMS CORES requires a range of wet- and dry-lab activities, along with administrative tasks.
Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in laboratory work where appropriate based on training and discussions with the BMS Manager.
  • Participate in laboratory duties related to the day-to-day operations of the core, such as waste and consumables management.
  • Assist the BMS Manager in ordering/maintaining stocks of critical reagents/consumables.
  • Maintain the BMS CORES Facility web page to ensure the most up-to-date information is available for our current/potential clients.
  • Work with BMS CORES Facility clients and MRDO to handle billing and cost recovery.
  • Support outreach initiatives for the BMS Core Facility, such as poster design/creation, and facilitating user meetings/seminars.
Note
Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.
Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in biological or medical science with at least 1 year of laboratory experience.
  • Comfortable working in a lab setting with toxic chemicals. Ability to follow protocols and adhere to strict instrument guidelines and safety procedures.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects, with varying deadlines.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and good interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivated with an ability to work independently. Also having a willingness to learn from and work collaboratively with the members of the CORES team.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office tools.

Assets
  • Education or experience with life science research in any capacity.
  • Knowledge related to the management of a research lab, such as purchasing and inventory management.
  • Knowledge of the Infinity Work Management Platform.
  • Experience with coding tools, such as R and Python.
