About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Technical Manager, Laboratory Client and Support Centre and working collaboratively with the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (PLM) management team and medical staff, the Technical Supervisor is responsible for the efficient, timely, cost-effective quality driven operation of Blood Collection Services at the QEII Health Sciences Center. The Supervisor also supports the daily operation of multi-site blood collection clinics, including Bayers Road, Spryfield and St Margaret's Bay. The Supervisor works closely with the Central Specimen Accessioning and Central Reporting Supervisor.

In collaboration with the Technical Manager and Department Head, the Supervisor:

  • Ensures the provision of a high level of customer service to patients and healthcare providers by effectively deploying and supporting the technical and administrative staff
  • Ensures that equipment used in the collection clinics are properly serviced and maintained
  • Ensures there are sufficient and appropriate materials available
  • Ensures high standards of safety procedures by constant evaluation and monitoring
  • Supports and coordinates recruitment, training, performance evaluations and management
  • Focus on quality ensuring staff competency and safe patient care
  • Coordinates the availability of resources for implementation and ongoing evaluation of approved new procedures and equipment
  • Consults with, collaborates, and responds to patients, healthcare providers, hospitals, nursing units and other internal and external clients regarding delivery of services
  • Informs decisions about the most efficient use of financial, human and material resources while meeting operational needs and working within the appropriate policies and financial budgets
  • Participates in short- and long-term planning for area(s) of responsibility, including planning for new, revised or expanded service
  • Makes objective and respectful decisions consistent with policies, standards and objectives of the laboratory in an environment that involves consideration of patient safety, future needs of the organization and best use of human and material resources
  • Demonstrates good stewardship in the identification, reporting & mitigation of unsafe Acts or conditions

About You

We would love to hear from you if you have the following:

  • Graduate of an approved program in Medical Laboratory Science or MSc. in discipline
  • Must be licensed with NSCMLT
  • Certification with CSMLS is required
  • Medical Laboratory Technologist with four (4) years progressively more responsible experience in a laboratory, plus completion of a management program or commitment to successfully completing a management program in three years and/or a combination of education, training and progressively more responsible experience
  • Previous management experience and direct supervision of staff and/or multiple departments in a laboratory setting is preferred
  • Previous expertise in the preanalytical aspects of the laboratory medicine is an asset
  • Demonstrates supervisory and leadership skills
  • Excellent organization and decision-making skills
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills are essential
  • Knowledge of management systems and accreditation requirements
  • Advanced computer skills and knowledge of Cerner Laboratory Information System (LIS) as related to the function of the section(s) is preferred
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Hours

  • Permanent, Full-Time position; 75 hours bi-weekly
  • Travel to other sites will be required

Compensation and Benefits

$37.61 - $49.97 hourly
